Fern Wahlstrom, 87, died Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. Services were held at the Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake on Friday, August 25, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Paul Wiegman officiated.

Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee.

Fern was born in Aurelia, the daughter of Pierre and Astrid Bengston. She was raised and educated in Aurelia, where she graduated high school. Fern then worked in the Farmer's National Bank in Aurelia for several years.

Fern was united in marriage to Frank Wahlstrom on April 18, 1953. The couple made their home in Holstein, Cedar Falls, Webster City and Cherokee. Upon their retirement in 1980, they moved to a home in Orleans on Big Spirit Lake. The past 4 1/2 years Fern lived in Fremont, Neb. with her daughter Marcia and husband Brad.

Fern was an avid church worker including teaching Sunday School, accompanying on the piano, helping in secretarial capacities, alter guild and devotional studies. She also served on the election board in Cherokee. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee before moving to Spirit Lake. She then attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Estherville while living at the Lakes.

Fern loved fishing, gardening, cooking, music and traveling. She also loved her dog, Pepper and cat, Gizzy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 1994. Survivors include her daughter, Marcia Katz and her husband Brad of Fremont, Neb.; step grandchildren, Brandon, Ashley and Rachel Katz also of Fremont; as well as many relatives and friends.
