Eleanor R. Martin, 86, of rural Aurelia, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006 at 2:55 a.m. in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Pastor Michael Hyde officiated. Burial is in the Afton Township Cemetery, rural Cherokee.

There was a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Visitation was on Monday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6:30 until 8 p.m. The family requests that memorials be sent to Maple Grove Church of God or the General Baker Library in Sutherland.

Eleanor was born April 4, 1920 in rural Sutherland to Lester and Mary (Dodge) Draper.

She graduated from Sutherland High School in 1938. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She was married to Lester R. Martin on Nov. 28, 1957 at Larrabee. She had lived on a farm in Spring Township for 49 years. She taught rural school and later Kindergarten in Sutherland for many years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Maple Grove Church of God in rural Sutherland. She did volunteer work for the Foundation Academy in Sutherland and Cherokee. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Retired Teachers Association. She loved to read and enjoyed farm animals but her true love was for children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lester on Feb. 27, 2004 and two brothers Darrel and Ray Draper.

She is survived by two brothers: James Draper and his wife Helen of Cherokee; Ralph Draper and his wife Eleanor of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Ruth Draper of Perry, Iowa and Margaret Draper of Clarinda, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.
