Funeral of Miss Hazel Dunn

Services of Much Beloved Young Woman at the
St. Joseph's Church Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

No definite reason except the general one of heart failure has been given by physicians or dentists of Mason City yet as to the death of Miss Hazel Dunn in the office of Dr. Horace Beemer, Monday afternoon.

Dr. W.E. Long, county coroner who was called after the young woman became unconcious and was present while efforts were being made to revive her with a lung motor, states that death may have and probably was caused by air entering the
blood vessels by the way of the mouth and passing through the veins to the heart where its
presence in the heart caused death.

A number of physicians who were questioned on the case agreed in their opinions on the gas, which is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen.
They all said that the gas would not cause death, that an overdose was practically impossible, that it was administered to patients hours at a time in some cases without any bad results and that is was the safest general anesthetic known.

The gas was administered in Dr. Beecher's office for the extraction of a wisdom tooth, in the presence of Dr. J.E. Marek, physician and Dr. J. W. Kelly, dentist. An X-ray examination of the young woman's teeth was taken Sunday and Dr. Marek says that to the best of his knowledge, there was nothing about Miss Dunn's condition which would suggest itself as dangerous.

The medical profession as a whole in Mason City is extremely puzzled, over Miss Dunn's death because of their beliefs in the safety of the gas as an anesthetic and the fact that none could state any former fatalities with its use of which they have direct knowledge. No blame whatever is attached to the dentist or those present operating with him.

The shock of the sudden death of Miss Hazel Dunn Monday noon while undergoing an operation for the removal of a wisdom tooth has brought sorrow to the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Miss Dunn was a popular and well loved young woman having lived here all her life, and was widely known as a beatiful character. Since the death of her mother four years ago she has done her best to take her place at the head of the household for her father and sister. For three years she had held the office of the Grand Regent of the Daughters of Isabella, one of the largest organizations of women in the city and she has filled her office well. Her's was a life well spent, adorned by the simple beauty of kindly deeds and a cheerful spirit. And the sympathy of those who mourn her passing goes out to the bereaved father and sister the loss of their beloved companion.

Hazel Beatrice Dunn was born October 13, 1894 in this city. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Hooks Dunn who died March 11, 1911. Her life was spent in Mason City. She attended the city schools graduating from the course in the class of 1911. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church and Grand Regent of the Daughters of Isabella for three years. As of a month ago she resigned the office. Since her gradation she has been at the home with her father and sister, Anita who survive her.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Joseph's church. The Rev. Father O'Connor will have charge of the services. Burial will be made in St. Joseph's cemetery.
