Suzanne Ellen Strand was born December 23, 1941, in Mason City, the second of six children to Lloyd Robert “Bob” and Bernadine (Monahan) Strand. She was raised in Manly, being baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Suzanne attended Manly High School, graduating in 1959—the final class before the school consolidated. After high school, Suzanne continued her education at St. Catherine University in Saint Paul, MN, and later at the University of Iowa, studying education. She was a third-grade teacher in Cedar Rapids until she married the love of her life, Dave Cook, on June 6, 1964, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. To this union, two children were born: Ellen in 1965 and Dave III in 1970. Dave worked with the FBI for 25 years; this career took the couple and their family many places: Houston, TX; Knoxville and Chattanooga, TN; Youngstown, OH; and finally, Springfield, IL. After Dave’s retirement in 1990, Dave and Suzanne returned to Manly, IA, to make their home. They later moved to Mason City, where they have lived since 2016.
Suzanne enjoyed decorating, collecting Hummels, and spending time with her family. She also made the best pies around—especially chocolate, rhubarb, and lemon meringue.
Suzanne was a member of Epiphany Parish and was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Left to cherish Suzanne’s memory are her husband of 54 years, Dave; her children, Ellen (Charles Pollet) Cook of Las Vegas, NV, and Dave (Tara) Cook of Jacksonville, IL; grandchildren, Tayler and Shae Upton and D.J. Cook; siblings, Rita Rose of St. Petersburg, FL, Cynthia (Millard) Anderson of Sheldon, IA, and Philip (Pauline) Strand of Hampton, IA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Those preceding her in death are her parents, Bob and Bernadine Strand; sisters, Dorothy Hill, Mary Larson, and a sister in infancy, Mary Catherine Strand; and brothers-in-law Phil Rose and Tom Larson.
Donations may be made in her name to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second Street S.E., Mason City, IA.
