Joan S. Carney, 80, of Mason City, Iowa, died Monday (May 21, 2018) at the Providence-St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30am Wednesday (June 6, 2018) at Epiphany Parish- Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 N Adams Ave, Mason City with Reverend Austin Wilker officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5pm until 7pm on Tuesday (June 5, 2018) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City with a Rosary at 6:30pm followed by a scriptural wake service.

Joan was born on June 18, 1937 the daughter of Elmer "Bud" and Irma (Schufflebein) Jenson in Forest City, Iowa. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1956. An avid roller skater in her youth she met "her one and only" after skating at the local rink one night. Joan married Richard D. Carney on November 14, 1959 at Holy Family Catholic Church. They were married 58 years and were rarely apart. The couple was blessed with three children Patrick, Laura and Kevin. She often said that all she ever wanted to be was a mother and was happy she got her wish. She prided herself on how well she took care of her husband.

Joan loved the outdoors and puttering in the yard. Yard work was never a chore for her. She was a mother who enjoyed not only her children but all children. Quick to put up a softball game in the backyard, play badminton over the clothesline, hopscotch on the drive and always had a stash of cookies or lollipops. She was a great storyteller and had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed reading mysteries, watching old western movies, playing penny slot machines and the pull tabs at HyVee East. She was highly disappointed with "the scratchers" in CA. She enjoyed eating out and finding a good buffet. John Wayne and Gene Autry were her heroes and Johnny Cash and Elvis ruled.

She was always ready for a good laugh or an adventure. She had a connection with animals (dogs in particular) but it was family legend how she went to the LA Zoo and much to the surprise of all watching was observed to have a "special moment of communication" with a giant orangutan.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Richard Carney, her parents Elmer and Irma Jenson, her sons Patrick and Kevin Carney, her siblings Jerry and William Jenson and three beloved and devoted German Shepherds all three named Max.

She will be greatly missed by her sister, Mae Long of Algona, her daughter Laura Carney, son-in-law Barry Cullison and grandson Darby Carney Cullison of Sherman Oaks, California and numerous nieces and nephews.
