March 14, 1996MASON CITY -- Helen W. Hanes, 92, of 324 Second St., N.E., a former resident of 933 N. Delaware Ave., died Monday (March 4, 1996) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
The body was cremated.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the donor's choice.
Helen Atwood Wells was born Oct. 8, 1903, in La Crosse, Wis., the only daughter of Fred Eugene and Hattie Lou (Pace) Wells.
Her family moved to Mason City in 1915 and she graduated from Mason City High School. Helen graduated from Mason City Junior College and attended the University of Minnesota.
She worked as a lab technician at Kenosha, Wis., and later at Park Hospital in Mason City.
She married Joel F. Hanes on Jan. 21, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minn.
The couple lived in Mason City, where Joel was employed by Jacob E. Decker and Sons and was later owner of Yelland and Hanes.
Helen was a member of the First Christian Church, Eastern Star, and was a past chapter regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She had been an officer of the Parent Teacher Association and a scout troop leader. She enjoyed travel, spending time with her family and summer activities at Clear Lake.
Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Dunn and her husband, Richard Dunn, of Mesa, Ariz; Dorothy Jean Stone of Nekoosa, Wis., and Barbara Ann Roberts of Nauvoo, Ill.; two sons, Joel Charles Hanes and his wife, Joyce, of Mason City, and Edward Eugene Hanes and his wife, Billie, of Clear Lake; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joel, in 1966; and three brothers, Donald Eugene, Ernest Pace and Harry Oliver Wells.
