July 23, 2016Robert "Bob" Glidden, 78, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Celebration of Bob Glidden’s life was held on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Scott A. Kozisek, of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garner, Iowa officiating. Following the service military honors were provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
The family suggests memorials to the restoration of the USS Slater Destroyer Escort, Albany, N.Y. In care of Destroyer Escort Historical Museum, USS Slater DE 766, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, N.Y., 12201-1926.
Bob was born in Windom, Minn., the son of Thomas and Helen Gertrude (Putt) Glidden on July 23, 1937. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1956. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1956-1960 on USS Loeser Destroyer Escort.
He married Diana Christensen in April 1961. They lived in Spencer where their two children, Terri and Jeff, were born. They later moved to Ventura, Iowa where he worked for Hancock County COOP Oil for the next 37 years. In 2000 he retired and helped his wife, Bonnie, with her grooming business, Mutt Cuts. He married Bonnie Walker on Oct. 10, 1981, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa.
He enjoyed golf, his coffee buddies at the Ventura Mart, socializing with his friends at Rookies and Clear Lake V.F.W., reading, playing sudoko and spending winters in Panama City Beach, Fla. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and his dog, Gabi Jo.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Glidden, Clear Lake; two children, Terri (Dennis) Van Hemert, Ogden, Iowa and Jeff (Kitty) Glidden, Thayne, Wyo.; two granddaughters, Courtney and Caitlyn Van Hemert; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Nancy Walker, Clear Lake; sister-in-law’s, Clarice Glidden, Denison, Iowa and Nancy Glidden, Ventura; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dick and Chuck Glidden.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
