Irene A. Roney, 97, of 8371 150th St., Swaledale, Iowa, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa. Private funeral services were held at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa with interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale, Iowa. Family suggests memorials to Irene A. Roney memorial fund.

Irene was born June 30, 1905 in Burnsville, Minn., the daughter of William and Jennie (DeJordt) Benzing. She graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1924 and attended the University of Iowa and Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa graduating with a B.A. degree in 1927. She also had a first grade-teaching certificate.

Irene taught school in Swaledale and Manly, Iowa, and in the later years in Thornton, Iowa, Clear Lake and Harding School in Mason City.

She belonged to church circles, the women¹s garden club of Thornton, Pleasant Valley Cemetery Society, bridge clubs and the senior citizen¹s center in Swaledale. She enjoyed reading, handwork and ceramics.

Irene is survived by her daughter, LaRue Meier and her husband, Richard, Swaledale; a son, Loren Jay Roney, Swaledale; six grandchildren, Jay “Bud” Roney and his wife, Dawn, Clear Lake, Scott Roney, Mason City, Shirley Roney, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Terry C. Roney and his wife, Jennifer, Plymouth, Iowa, Julie Roney, Elgin, Minn. and Beverly Roney, Elgin, Minn.; five great-grandchildren, Paige, Summer, Spencer, Michael and Katlynn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Grant, in 1985 and one infant brother, Ralph.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
