Charity Marie Ward, 90, of Swaledale, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at the Rockwell Nursing Home in Rockwell, Iowa. online condolences may be left at www.fullerton.com.

Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Swaledale, with Pastor John Scherb officiating. There will be a one-hour prior visitation also at the church. Inurnment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Swaledale.

Charity Marie was born May 10, 1923, in Albany, Mo., to Otha and Opal (Wayman) Farthing. Marie attended school in Albany, Mo., receiving her GED later in her life.

On Sept. 1, 1940, in Clear Lake, Iowa, she was united in marriage to Harvey (Pat) Ward. Into this union eight children were born. She was a member of the Swaledale United Methodist Church, where she taught both Bible school and Sunday school.

Charity was a homemaker her entire life, and was well known for her homemade doughnuts. Among her favorite things to do were talking about her fishing trips (from Minnesota with family, to Hank’s Creek with her grandchildren), playing cards, playing bingo, or an occasional trip to the casino. She was an avid reader. One of the highlights of her life was winning a trip to the Greek Islands, and then returning to her son’s (Richard) home in Belgium. While there, she also had the opportunity to visit several other European countries.

She is survived by her children Dennis (Nancy) Ward of Rockwell, Richard (Bernadette) Ward of Apex, N.C., and Nancy Thompson of Rockwell, Pastor Lester (Lora) Ward of Lansing, Ill., Opal (Don) Brass of Rockwell, and Tim (Shirley) Ward of St. Michael, Minn., a daughter-in-law, Barb Ward of Ventura, 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Lylus Monger of Beardstown, Ill., and two sisters-in-law, Peg Odom and Elizabeth Ward.

Charity is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harvey “Pat” Ward and a brother Arvel Farthing, a son- in- law Steve Thompson in 2009 and two sons, Christopher Ward in 2009 and David Ward in infancy.
