Everett “Butch” Smuck Jr., 71, of Mason City, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue at the church on Friday one hour before services. Memorials may be directed to the Everett Smuck Jr. Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com.

Butch was born April 13, 1944 in Iowa Falls, Iowa the son of Everett and Marcella (Carr) Smuck Sr. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls. Butch graduated from Iowa Falls High School, then attended Ellsworth Community College where he played basketball. After college, he served in the US Army/National Guard.

Butch married Carolyn Buddenhagen June 8, 1968 in Iowa Falls. Through the years, Butch worked in sales for Payless Cashway and Orkin Pest Control and at United Building Center/ProBuild. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served as an usher. A few of his interests included bowling, golf, coffee at Hy-Vee, Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Basketball. He also enjoyed coaching his children in their sports and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Butch is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Mason City; son, Matt (Michele) Smuck of Mason City; daughter, Melissa (Dan) Borchardt of Mason City; six grandchildren, Derek, Andrew, Ryan and Noah Smuck, Emma and Nathan Borchardt; one sister, Mary Kenison of Iowa Falls; two brothers, Randy Smuck of Mason City and Scott Smuck of Mason City; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Myrna and Bruce Borchert; several nieces and nephews.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Pat Hartwig, and a niece, Sarah Smuck; two brothers-in-law, Bill Kenison and Lee Hartwig.
