Maedeane L. Sappenfield, 86, of Mason City, died Friday, April 11, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating.

Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. A private family inurnment will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Maedeane Lucille Mennenga was born Nov. 1, 1927, in Belmond, the daughter of Henry G. and Lucille B. (Legge) Mennenga. She attended school in Belmond. Maedeane married David R. Sappenfield on May 14, 1948, in Belmond. She enjoyed teaching music for many years before her retirement in 2010. Maedeane sold organs at Jones Piano House for many years. She also enjoyed composing and playing music on the piano and organ, Matinee Musicale, cooking, canning, sewing, decorating, gardening and calligraphy. Maedeane was a seamstress, a culinary artist, campfire girls leader, and multiple blue ribbon award winner at the North Iowa Fair.

She volunteered at the Community Kitchen. She was also the first licensed woman pilot in Wright County, Iowa.

Maedeane was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for 18 years, was active in Lydia Circle and Bible Study. She was also a member of the American Guild of Organists, the Iowa Music Teachers Association, and has a biography published in Marquis Who’s Who of American Music Educators.

Maedeane is survived by her children: David C. Sappenfield of Mason City, Valoris J. Racz of Wendell, N.C., and Linda J. Paske and husband Lance of Mason City; 6 grandchildren: Aaron L. Paske, Leah J. Krueger and husband Adam, Karith L. Bishop, Jarrad L. Bishop, David J. Sappenfield, and Lorra Mae Sappenfield; great-grandchildren: Dylan Beckwith, Morgan Beckwith, J. Chase Bishop, Kaidyn Paske and Adisyn Krueger; and 1 sister: Martha Slining of Belmond. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband in 1997.
