Thornton ~ Luverne Bell, 95, of Thornton, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home. Funeral Services will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at Retz Funeral Home, Thornton, with Rev. Travis Stevick of Rockwell United Methodist Church presiding. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 1 hour before the service at the funeral home.

Luverne Mae Baker was born February 27, 1922, on the family farm near Thornton, daughter of Walter and Malinda (Johnson) Baker. She graduated from Thornton High School in 1939 and later attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She then taught school at Richland Township School that she attended as a child.

Luverne was united in marriage with Eldon Bell at Bethany, Missouri, on July 19, 1941, in a double wedding ceremony with her brother, Russell, and his wife, Jean Baker.

After their marriage, they farmed near Alexander until moving to a farm they purchased south of Thornton in 1954. She lived there until 2012 when she moved to the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Luverne was a longtime member of the Alexander United Methodist Church. She loved to travel and wintered in Weslaco, Texas, with Eldon for over 20 years. She enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends and many different games with her grandchildren. Fishing, golf, and gardening were also other activities she enjoyed.

Family members include her sons: Dennis (Gloria), Lincoln, NE; Richard (Julie), Thornton; and Douglas, Thornton; 6 grandchildren: Tammy (Harlan) Sorensen; Bryan Bell; Trent (Jenny) Bell; Aaron (Kimberlee) Bell; Alison Bell (Jason Boesch); Megan (David) Little; 13 great grandchildren: Jessica (Andrew) Malone; Abigail Sorensen; Hayley Bell; Garrett Bell; Karissa (fiancé Darion Shropshire); Nicholas Bell; Hannah Bell; Emalee Bell; Natalee Bell; Aaden Bell; Austin Bell; Jacob Little; Claire Little; 1 great great grandchild: Jade Malone; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Poland, Rockwell; Lavonne (Dallas) Card, Alexander; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Walter and Malinda Baker, her husband, Eldon, in 2005; and her brother Russell and his wife, Jean Baker.
