Arnet “Arnie” George Schraan, 97, of Mason City, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, at Mercy Hospice, Johnston, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., with the Rev. Matthew Muters officiating.

Following the service, military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Association. There will be no visitation. Per family request, his body will be cremated. Inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Arnie was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Andrew and Esther (Larson) Schraan. He graduated from Mechanic Arts High School, St. Paul, in 1939 then attended the University of Minnesota for one year. Arnie served in the US Air Force during WW II attaining the rank of technical sergeant. He received his honorable discharge in 1945.

Arnie married Mary A. Overgaard June 25, 1950, in Centerville, South Dakota. Prior to moving to Mason City in 1962, Arnie lived in Minneapolis and Des Moines. Arnie worked in sales for E.J. Brach & Sons Candy Co. for many years. He retired in 1982. This September, Arnie and Mary moved to Adel to live with their daughter. He was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, the American Legion and was a past member of the Elks Lodge. Some of his interests included golf, woodworking and vegetable gardening.

Arnie is survived by his wife, Mary A. Schraan of Adel; son, Robert A. Schraan of Roseville, Minnesota; daughter, Barbara (Gerry) Kopitzke of Adel; grandchildren, Brian (Elizabeth) Freeman of Des Moines, Jacob (Krissy) Freeman of South Amherst, Ohio and Jessica Freeman of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; and 5½ great grandchildren.

Arnie was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Vivian Miksak and 1 grandson, Timothy Schraan.
