Obituary ~ Milton D. (Oliver) "Dutch" Fulghum
April 23, 1890 ~ July 16, 1918

Milton D. Fulghum was born in 1890. He served during World War I as a Private with the 168th Infantry, Company K, Rainbow Division. The Rainbow Division became one of the first sent to Europe in 1918 to support French troops in battles at Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel, the Verdun Front, and Argonne. On July 14, 1918 the Rainbow Division, acting as part of the 4th French Army, assisted in containing the final German offensive at the Battle of Champagne. It was during this battle that Private Milton Fulghum was killed. The following is the official account:

"On July 16, 1918, Private Fulghum was making his eleventh trip through the bombardment to the dressing station when a high explosive shell struck near him and almost blew both legs off; he died on the way to the hospital. He was one of the first to volunteer for such hazardous work. Private Fulghum was admired and liked by all. Relative's address: Mrs. Geo. L. Burmeister, Mason City, Iowa. He was recommended for the D.S.C. (Distinguished Service Cross) by his Captain."
