MASON CITY — Joseph L. Frank, 86, formerly of 1619 N. President Ave. in Mason City, died Friday morning (Nov. 17, 2006) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams in Mason City with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with military respects provided by the Mason City Memorial Association.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, Nov. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City with a Scripture vigil service beginning at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to Joseph’s service Tuesday at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may wish to direct them to the Joseph L. Frank Memorial Fund or Hospice of North Iowa in his name.

Joseph Leo Frank was born on April 4, 1920, in Mason City, the son of Clement and Mary (Rupp) Frank. He was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church and was one of 13 children born to his parents.

On June 5, 1942, Joseph was inducted into the United States Army at Camp Dodge, Iowa, and served his country during World War II. After honorably and faithfully completing his designated military duties, Joseph was formally discharged on June 1, 1943, at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Joseph was united in marriage to JoAnn Mabel Davies on Aug. 1, 1953, in Minnesota. The couple became the proud parents of four sons. Joseph and JoAnn treasured time together while fishing, wild game hunting, Sunday afternoon drives and socializing with their friends and relatives. His beloved JoAnn died on Dec. 30, 1983.

Joseph was a hard worker and providing for his family was of great importance to him. He was employed at Decker Meat Packing (Armour) as a butcher for many years.

Joseph was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, a life member of the VFW Post 733 and the Moose Lodge, all in Mason City and also the North American Fishing Club.

Some of Joseph’s favorite activities and hobbies included cheering for the New York Yankees, the thrill of purchasing cars and fishing boats, vegetable gardening, tending to his apple trees, attending picnics and reunions and cooking, especially foods of his German heritage. Joseph was well known for creating his own special canned hot sauce and “Grandma” pancakes.

He looked forward to the holidays and sharing them with JoAnn and his children and grandchildren. He delighted in having hunting dogs at his side throughout his life, most recently, his companionship with his spaniel, “Rocky.”

His family recalls that Joseph was extremely stubborn, loving, giving and had a great sense of humor.

Joseph is survived by his four sons, Gary (Deb) Frank of Alexandria, Mo., Jimmie (Deb) Frank of El Dorado Hills, Calif., Donald Frank of Mason City, and Jackie (Kim) Frank of Mason City; his two sisters, Charlotte Walker of Mason City and Katherine Schwab of Milwaukee, Wis.; his three brothers, John (Shirley) Frank, Robert (Lola) Frank and William (Evelyn) Frank, all of Mason City; and his seven grandchildren, JoAnn Frank, Tara Frank, Michele Frank, Amanda Frank, Joseph Frank, Tonya Jo Frank and Steve Frank. Joseph will also be dearly missed by several great-grandchildren; his special friend, Roxanne Keeney, and her daughter, Amanda Keeney; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Joseph in death are his wife, JoAnn Frank; his parents, Clement and Mary Frank; five sisters, Dory Strong, Rose Donahoo, Elizabeth Rupp, Anna Jean Dondrucek and Barbara Frank; and his two brothers, Marty and Jacob Frank.
