December 18, 2000ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Louis P. Diaz, 79, of St. Louis, formerly of Mason City, died Dec. 15 (2000). Mr. Diaz was a retired teacher and coach from Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Mo. He was the first baseball coach for Newman High in Mason City and also had coached at St. Joe before moving.
Lou was born on June 29, 1930, to Luis and Elisa Diaz in Mason City. He attended Holy Family School and Loras College. He was united in the sacrament of marriage at Holy Family Church to Rosemary Fullerton of Rockford, Iowa. They lived in Mason City before moving to Minnesota and finally settling down in Kirkwood, a township near St. Louis.
Lou was well known for his own baseball and coaching skills as well as his people skills. He was both a friend and mentor to all high school kids who were fortunate enough to have him help mold their lives.
After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working on his lakeside home and traveling with Rosemary to visit friends and relatives.
Lou is at peace in Heaven now (or is it Iowa?) playing 2nd base.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rosemary Diaz; his daughters, Pam (Greg) Petersen, Connie (Tom) Neary and Cathy (Mark) Lien; and his son, Dan (Tammy) Diaz; his sister, Alice Lee of Mason City; and his dear grandchildren, Matthew, Adam, Sarah, Katie, Tyler, Travis, and Joshua.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Elisa Diaz; and his brothers, Al and Joe Diaz.
The funeral was held in Kirkwood and interment was at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
