VESTAL, N.Y. -- Joe Diaz, 73, of Vestal, N.Y., passed away on Monday (July 24, 1995) at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, N.Y., after a brief illness.

A Memorial Mass was offered at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Johnson City, with Monsignor James D. Kane officiating.

Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott, N.Y., was in charge of arrangements.

A Memorial Golf Scholarship is being established in Joe's memory by the John Kelly Golf League c/o John Hriciga, 204 Antonte Drive, Endicott, N.Y. 13760 or contributions may be made in Joe's name to one's favorite charity.

He was a member and lector of Blessed Sacrament Church of Johnson City.

He attended Holy Family Catholic High School and Junior College in Mason City, Iowa; he was a graduate of Iowa State University; Syracuse University with a masters in engineering education; Cornell University with a Ph.D in Curriculum Education Administration and Computer Science.

He was a member of ETA Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Phi.

He was a retired employee of IBM Corporation, retiring in 1984 after 33 years of service and a member of its Quarter Century Club.

Joe was promoted to advisory engineer in 1961, worked on various engineering assignments, Small Systems Information Retrieval, technical proposals for new business, applications programming, Software Quality Assurance and Avionics Engineering.

Joe achieved two patents and had one invention published. Joe taught at Pan American University in McAllen, Texas, under the faculty loan program.

He was an avid golfer, a great reader, computer specialist and consultant.

Neighbors and friends describe Joe as a good, kind and gentle man.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Diaz; children from a previous marriage; one daughter, Mary Kiser, Clearwater, Fla; one son, Joe (Jr.) Diaz of Clearwater, Fla.; two granddaughters, Heather and Elisa; one sister, Alice Lee of Mason City, Iowa; one brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Rosemary Diaz, of St. Louis, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis Diaz and Elisa (nee) Flores Diaz; a brother, Alphonso Diaz and sister-in-law, Judith Diaz.
