Donald Luverne Davis, 83, of Dumont, died Saturday, Nov. 1 [2008], at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.

He was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Alexander, Franklin County, son of Lloyd Allen and Hattie Palmateer Davis. He married Bernita Wilhelmina on Nov. 4, 1951, and they later divorced.

Mr. Davis received his education in the Alexander rural schools, worked on the family farm and did odd jobs in the Alexander and Belmond areas. He served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman first class, then went to work for the meat locker in Belmond. He later worked for the railroad for several years, and for seven years worked for the Franklin County road maintenance crew. He farmed and operated a repair shop and worked for National Crystal Sugar Corp. for six years.

Survived by: a daughter, Charlotte Davis of Allison; and two sons, Henry Joe (Julie) Davis of Puyallup, Wash., and Luverne Allan (Edna) Davis of Allison.

Preceded in death by: two brothers, William and Albert; and three sisters, Violet, Mary and Clara.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilmar (rural Greene), with burial at 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Donald enjoyed playing cards and going to auctions. He was a fisherman who enjoyed catching turtles whether it was in the river, creek or ponds. He was a smart man and a "jack of all trades."

[Interment was made at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.]
