December 16, 2014Ned Carter Brandt, 83, passed away at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, FL on December 13 [2014] of complications from surgery.
He was born in Ames, IA on December 18, 1930 to Floyd and Helen (Brendel) Brandt. He graduated from Mason City High School, Mason City, IA in 1949. He received a Baccalaureate degree in Commerce from the University of Iowa in 1953 and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and the U of I golf team.
He was united in marriage to Kathleen Ann Lannon in 1960 and to this union three children were born; Jim, John and Liz.
Ned began his business career in 1955 and in 1960 established Edwards-Brandt and Associates, an insurance and real estate firm in Mason City and served as President, until his retirement. He was also president of K.D.P. Ltd., an automobile and equipment leasing company. Ned was very much involved in his profession and community.
He was a member and past president of the Cerro Gordo County Association of Independent Insurance Agents, former District Director of the Iowa Independent Insurance Agents. He served as president of the Divisional Board of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Mason City and on the Board of Directors of Mason City First National Bank and Norwest Bank. While in Mason City he also served on the Board of Directors of the Mason City Country Club.
After his retirement, Ned and his wife Kay spent their winters in Naples and Estero Fl. where he was able to pursue his passion for golf. He had a single digit handicap and had 4 holes in one.
At the time of his death he was a member of Wild Cat Run, Estero and Hyperion Country Club in Johnston, IA., where he relocated in 2004 to be closer to the children.
Ned especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's numerous athletic events. In his spare time he played cards and read spiritual books.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kay; John and Lauri Brandt and their children, Carter, Mary, Sarah, Meg and Michael; Liz Smith and her children Mackenzie and C.J. Smith and daughter-in-law Sue Brandt and sons Ryan and Tim.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Helen Brandt, brother Joe Brandt and son James.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 19 at 11:00 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, West Des Moines, IA with brother-in-law, Reverend Timothy R. Lannon S.J. officiating.
