October 23, 2010URBANDALE, IA -- James "Jim" J. Brandt died Wednesday, October 20. 2010 following a long battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 25, 2010 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines.
Jim was born on December 29, 1961 in Mason City, Iowa to the Ned and Kay Brandt. He attended Mason City schools and then the University of Iowa. In 1984 he received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administrations and was a member of the Mortar Board and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Societies. Jim belonged to the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
Jim married Sue Scholl on June 1, 1984. He graduated with High Distinction from the University of Iowa Law School in 1987. He was a member of the Order of the Coif, a honorary legal society. Jim joined the Mason City firm of Pappajohn, Shiver, Eide and Nicholas in 1987. While in Mason City, Jim was active on several boards including Newman Catholic High School, Holy Family Church and the Y.M.C.A. He coached Mason City youth hockey and little league baseball teams and was a member of the Mason City Country Club.
In 2002 Jim moved to Des Moines, Iowa and became General Council Attorney for Kum &Go, L.C. He also assisted on the Ethics Committee of Hospice of Central Iowa, Iowa Groceries Association and numerous other business interests. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sue, and sons, Ryan and Tim; parents, Ned and Kay Brandt; brother, John (Lauri) Brandt; sister, Elizabeth (Jeff) Smith; four nieces, three nephews; in-laws: Ray and Peggy Scholl; brothers-in-law: Scott (Patty) Scholl, Mark Scholl; and sister-in-law, Theresa (Steve) Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Lannon; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brandt; uncles: Joe Brandt, Denny Lannon; and brothers-in-law: Alan and Doug Scholl.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Dunn's Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines where a vigil service will begin at 4:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mason City Newman Schools, or Dowling Catholic High School or Hospice of Central Iowa or Colorectal Cancer Coalition.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Tom Buroker, Pat and Michelle for their loving and compassionate care of Jim.
