Alvin Eldon Boelman, 72, of Mason City, died on Saturday, November 5, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, after a long bout with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, November 9, 2005, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, with Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore officiating. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Alvin was born on February 4, 1933 in Meservey, the son of Henry and Jennie (Pals) Boelman. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from the Meservey High School in 1950. He was employed by Central Telephone until he joined the U.S. Army. Al served from 1953 to 1955 in Korea. Following his discharge, he joined Northwestern Bell as a cable splicer. He retired in 1986 as an outside plant engineer with U.S. West, but contracted back to U.S. West for nine years following his retirement.

Al married Jeannette (Jan) Dahl on December 22, 1956 at Baldwin, Wisconsin. Following retirement they enjoyed a trip to Norway and a cruise to the Caribbean. After wintering in Arizona, Florida and Texas, they settled down the past fifteen winters in Palm Desert, California. Al was an avid golfer, enjoyed attending tournaments, and played almost daily. He was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on various boards and was a captain of ushers.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Al is survived by his wife; daughters, Kristin (Norman) Stradleigh of Phoenix, Arizona and Mary (Fred) Oien of Boone; grandchildren, John Morris Oien of Brookings, South Dakota and Mary Ruth Oien at Iowa State University; brothers, Norman (Julane) Boelman of Meservey and Dennis (Miriam) Boelman of Belmond.
