Harold L. Sims was born Sept. 8, 1910, at Grand Junction, a son of Herman A. and Hattie (Osborne) Sims. He attended school in Grand Junction. Following school he helped on the farm. He worked for many years as a parts manager for International Harvester.

He was united in marriage to Mercedes Burke on July 3, 1935, in Grand Junction, and to this union was born one daughter. During the polio epidemic, in their generosity, they took in their 9-month-old niece, Joni Louk.

Bud never lost the gift of giving as he continued throughout his years to be a benefactor to many people.

During World War II, he was employed as a welding instructor at the shipyards in California. He kept his ties to the military by being a member of the National Guard. Later in life, he owned and operated Bud's Lunch in Jefferson until moving to Des Moines in 1963. There he was a welder at White's Construction Co. until retiring in 1975. Unable to remain idle, he then worked in the shipping and receiving department of Wilson's by Gary Williams Clothing Stores.

Bud was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Jefferson and then West Des Moines. He enjoyed his vegetable and flower gardens and was known as Mr. Fix-it when it came to repair of electrical, plumbing and woodworking.

Harold is survived by his wife, Mercedes, of Mason City; and one daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Marilyn) Newbrough of Iowa City; and his niece who he raised as a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Joni) Bealer, Mason City; five grandchildren, Stacy Newbrough, Shayne Tolsdorf, Brad Tolsdorf, Daniel Denhardt and Jeremy Bealer; and one great-grandson, Brandon Tolsdorf.

Bud will be reunited with those who preceded him: his parents; one brother, Elmer; and three sisters, Ida, Florence and Hazel.
