George B. Smith, 78, of 240th Street, Route 2, Nora Springs, died Saturday evening (Feb. 10, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Rodney Holmberg officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at 4:30 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

George was born on April 15, 1917, in rural Clear Lake, the son of William and LaCretia (Bradley) Smith. He attended school in the Mount Vernon area. George served in the Army and was honorably discharged.

He was united in marriage to Clara Mae Arndt on Oct. 30, 1937, in Swaledale. He spent most of his life in the Swaledale-Mason City areas farming. He had lived near Nora Springs since 1975. His favorite pastimes were spending time outdoors watching nature and watching "Andy Griffith" reruns. George was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City.

George is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Shirley) Paulsen of Green Isle, Minn., and Sandra Crotty of Mason City; four sons, George "Oley" and his wife, Helen Smith; Gary Smith; Denny and his wife, Twila Smith, all of Mason City, Jerry Smith of Nora Springs; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ella) Bruchner of Hiawatha; Mrs. Lester (June) Greene of North English, and Mrs. Mavis Madole of Mason City; two brothers, Roy and Dale Smith, both of Mason City; 37 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his wife in October 1987; one daughter, Dixie Paulsen; two sons, Gordon and Donald; his parents; and one sister, Bonnie Marson.
