Gene W. Hulse, 89, of Mason City, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, at Retz Funeral Home, 107 N. 2nd Street, Thornton. Interment will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 1 hour before the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorials in his memory to Hospice of North Iowa.

Gene Wood Hulse was born February 4, 1926, in Ware, Iowa a son of Otha Dwight and Rhea (Wood) Hulse. At a young age his family moved to Mingo where he grew up on a farm and graduated from Mingo High School.

Gene entered the U.S. Army and served in Germany as a tank crew member, surviving in the Battle of the Bulge. He was on his way to Japan when the Japanese surrender ended the war.

Returning to Iowa, Gene enrolled at Iowa State College and earned his teaching degree. This led him to teach at Sheldon, Iowa, where he met another teacher, Joan Boysen. The couple married August 16, 1950 and were blessed with two children. Gene returned to Iowa State and earned a Master’s Degree in Ag Economics while living in the famous Pammel Court.

Gene accepted a position as Ag Loan Officer at First National Bank in Mason City. He joined the First State Bank of Thornton in 1965, serving as president until retirement in 1978.

Gene and Joan traveled all over the United States in their motorhome and wintered in Arizona. Eventually they lived full time in Arizona, returning to Iowa in 2012 to be closer to family.

A devoted husband, Gene spent every day over the past 2 years visiting his wife of 65 years at Good Shepard Care Center.

His family includes his wife, Joan; daughter: Julie (Richard) Bell, Thornton; son: David (Virginia) Hulse, Alpine, CA, stepchildren Patrick and Yvette; grandchildren: Aaron (Kimberlee) Bell and their children, Emalee, Natalee, Aaden & Austin; Alison (Jason Boesch) Bell; Megan (David) Little and their children, Jacob & Claire; sister: Harriet Murphy, Ankeny; brother: Larry Hulse, Mingo, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law: Rosemary Hulse.
