GERALD W. SMIT

Gerald W. “Red” Smit, 62, of La Porte City, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 1995, at home.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 10, at American Lutheran Church of LPC with the Rev. Laurel Nordin, Interim Pastor and Rev. Otto J. Reitz, former pastor of American Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was in the West View Cemetery of LPC.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Gerald was born March 20, 1932, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the son of Henry and Grace (Cordes) Smit. He graduated from Clear Lake High School, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts and Masters degree from UNI. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 – 1956 during the Korean Conflict. On May 27, 1956, he married Marilyn O Swenson, in Scarville, Iowa.

Mr. Smit was a junior and senior high school teacher and golf coach at La Porte City schools for 35 years, retiring in 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; one son, Tim A, and his wife, Kathy Smit, Iowa; two grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Smit, Perry, Iowa; five sisters, Carol Muller, Swaledale, Iowa; Alma Ostrander, Clear Lake, Elaine Gettman, Clear Lake, Grace Groves, St. Petersburg, Fla., Florence Berfield, Covina, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Smit, in 1977; and a brother, Merle Smit.

Honorary pallbearers were Pete Watkins, George Kelley, Edward Bunz.

Pallbearers were Fred Tripp, Gene Tripp, Bob Burkgren, Dick Ingvall, David Wilt, Douglas Watkins.
