Obituary ~ Patrick Hanley

Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, IowaLast Tuesday [September 1, 1908] about nine o'clock while engaged in his duties as section foreman on the Short Line, Patrick Hanley without any sign of warning to those who were near dropped over and in a few moments he had breathed his last. He was in his usual good health that morning and arose as usual and departed at six thirty for the Short Line to begin his owrk and with his two helpers, William Campbell and Ed Crawford went as far north on the line as the Will Eno farm and began work.
About nine o'clock he was engaged in raising the track and was assisted by both of his men, he had gone back a few steps to sight the rail to see if it was level and had stooped for that purpose when without any outcry he toppled over and although the men were at his side in a moment he was beyond aid and could not speak, dying in a few seconds.
Help was summoned and the body was brought to town at once and taken to his home.
Funeral services will be held in the Catholic church at Rockwell Friday forenoon and interment will be made in the [Sacred Heart] Catholic cemetery.
Patrick Hanley was born in Ballowmore (sic, should be Ballymore) county, Ireland, sixty-four years ago [April 15, 1844] and came to America thirty-four years ago and located in Chicago where he remained two years before coming to Sheffield where he has made his home ever since. In 1857 he ws married in Ireland to Miss Mary McNeil who with seven children survives him. The children are: Mrs. E. D. Flannery of Chicago, John Hanley of Fecus Falls, Minnesota, Mrs. Bernard Smith of Swaledale, Mrs. R. J. Richardson of Watford, Ontario, Canada, Mrs. W. H. Dodd of Hampton, Edward Hanley of Dougherty, Charles Hanley of Watford, Canada and also a daughter Bessie, who died one year ago.
Patrick Hanley had many friends in and around Sheffield who were greatly shocked to hear of his sudden death, as he wa a man who had never been seriously ill in his life. The family have the sympathy of all in their loss.
