ROCKWELL _ Peter Paul Freund, 76, of 1002 N. Washington Ave., Mason City, formerly of Rockwell, died Tuesday (July 1, 1997) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stephen Meyer officiating. A flag folding ceremony will be conducted at the church by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Following services, the body will be cremated. Family graveside services will be held at a later date at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and will continue at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart School Chapel, until time of services.

Peter Paul Freund was born July 14, 1920, in Garner, son of Peter and Katherine (Heck) Freund. He married Catherine Marceille Curley on April 12, 1947, in Austin, Minn.

Peter lived most of his life in Rockwell. He served as a corporal in the Marines during World War II. He worked construction for 40 years until retiring in 1979.

Peter enjoyed fishing, woodworking and he loved to play cards.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and a past member of American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Marceille Freund, Mason City; three daughters, Mary Kay Anderson, Mason City; Paulette Gabel and her husband, Roger, Charles City, and Debbie Gabel and her husband, David, Rockford; five grandchildren, Steve Gabel and his wife, Tina, Mason City; Scott Gabel, Rockford; Michelle Gabel, Mason City; Mike Gabel, Rockford, and Marty Anderson, Mason City; two great-granddaughters, Taylor Lee, Mason City, and Calista Kingery, Mason City; and two sisters, Marie Meier, Milan, Ill., and Rosella Gerk, Sarasota, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Matilda Grosland and Josephine Klesel.
