Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, IowaBarbara Kathleen (Cahalan) Fitzgerald, 84, Mason City, died Sunday, September 21, 2014, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Barbara will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 26, 2014, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell with Reverend Rodney Allers officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Rockwell. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with a Scriptural Wake Service at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday at the Sacred Heart Catholic School.
Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City, is in charge of the arrangements.
Barbara Kathleen Fitzgerald was born on October 18, 1929, in Rockwell the daughter of Michael and Geneva (Reineke) Cahalan. She attended Rockwell community school, graduating from Rockwell High School in 1947. She was united in marriage to John E. “Doc” Fitzgerald on May 7, 1949, and to this union five children were born, John, Sue Ann, Gary, Teresa, and Kevin.
Barbara worked as a dental assistant, and also as a bookkeeper for the Damons Department Store, Americana Nursing Home, and the Mason City Iron and Metals all in Mason City until she retired in 2002.
Barbara enjoyed bowling, was in a 500 card club, and sharing her baked goods with family and friends, but her great love and enjoyment was taking care of her family.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Guild, and the Rockwell American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, John (Donna) Fitzgerald of Clear Lake, Sue Ann Bergman of Cedar Rapids, Teresa (Mark) Dilbeck of Altadena, CA, Kevin Fitzgerald of Minneapolis, MN; 13 grandchildren, John Paul (Shelly) Fitzgerald of Mason City, Kalyn (Mike) Massee of Marinette, WI, Nikki (Fred) Yeboah of Cedar Rapids, Scot Bergman of Ankeny, Stacey (Sam) Winter of San Jose, CA, and Steffanie Bergman of San Jose CA, Shane, Shannon, and Maria Dilbeck of Altadena, CA, Connor, Carson, Cameron and Macie Fitzgerald of Minneapolis, MN; eight great-grandchildren; her siblings, Geri (Roy) Crisman of Wagner, SD, Kenneth (Henrietta Cahalan of Mason City, David (Gloria) Cahalan of Dubuque, Danny (Helen) Cahalan of Rockwell, and Marsha (Dan) Peterson of Fort Collins, CO; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Geneva Cahalan; her husband, John E. “Doc” Fitzgerald who died in January 1997, and a son, Gary Fitzgerald who died on July 28, 1969.
