V. H. PETERSEN DIED SUDDENLY
ARRANGEMENTS FOR RITES INCOMPLETE

CLEAR LAKE – Verne H. Petersen, 54, 310 N. 9th Street, died in Buena Vista County Hospital, Storm Lake, about noon Saturday. He had suffered a heart attack on Tuesday. Mr. Petersen had been state boat inspector since Feb. 1, 1938.

Mr. Petersen was born at Clear Lake Aug. 21, 1897, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Petersen, and grew up in the community, attended public school and the Hamilton School of Commerce in Mason City, worked with his father, who owned a boat line, a number of years, worked on the MacNider boat and commercial craft for 12 years and finally owned a boat of his own, the “Miss Betty.”

He was married to Miss Iva Hanna at Charles City April 10, 1917, and they have lived in Clear Lake since. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. James Oleson, Des Moines, and a son, Cpl. Richard Petersen, stationed in Japan. A son, George, 3, died in 1920.

He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. George P. Petersen, 712 N. 13th Street; two sisters, Mrs. Dorrance day, Klemme, and Mrs. C. L. Conklin, Los Angeles, Calif., and four brothers, Fred, Saginaw, Mich.; Roy, Ventura Heights; Arthur, 710 N. 10th Street, and Peter O., 712 N. 12th Street.

Mr. Petersen was active in all water safety movements, Red Cross first aid activities and instruction in safe handling of boats. He was an expert swimmer and is credited with saving several persons from drowning. During the past winter he assisted Mrs. Petersen in teaching Red Cross first aid classes and was first in this vicinity to demonstrate a new method of administering artificial respiration.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at Ward’s Funeral Home.

Transcriber’s Note – Verne H. Petersen was born August 21, 1897, died April 12, 1952 and was buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Section A Row 9.
