Mrs. Bemis, past head of DAV Auxiliary, dies at 75

Mrs. Sid A. (Leona F.) Bemis, 75, past commander of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, died Monday in a Mason City hospital. She had lived in Mason City 60 years and made her home at 917 N. Georgia.

Mrs. Bemis was born June 6, 1890, near Manchester, daughter of Cyrus and Adelia Bebee. She received her education in that area and came to Mason City in 1905. She was married to Sid A. Bemis Dec. 8, 1907, in Mason City.

Mrs. Bemis was a member and past president of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; a past president of the 6th District Conference of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and a member of the Auxiliary to the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Besides being a members and past commander of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, she also was past state chairman of the Iowa Department of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. She as a member of the Royal Neighbors, the Women of the Moose, of which she was past president, and Rebekah Lodge.

Surviving are her husband, nine daughters, Hazel Peterson, Mrs. O. S. (Gladys) Belseth and Mrs. Arthur (Lois) Rickens, all of Mason City; Mrs. Walter (Phyllis) Thomas, Sunnyvale, Calif.; Mrs. Paul (Iris) Carey, in Thailand; Mrs. Dick (Lila) O'Donnell and Mrs. Roger (Lily) Arndt, both of Mason City, and Evelyn and Faye, at home.

Two brothers Claud and Lee Bebee, Iowa, La.; a sister, Maggie Dolon, Thief River Falls, Minn.; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a son in infancy, a brother, a granddaughter and a great-grandson.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Major Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Marvin L. Hulse, pastor of Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel from 3 p.m. Wednesday until the time of services.
