S. A. Bemis, 79, retired cement plant worker, dies

Sydney A. Bemis, 79, retired safety director of Northwestern States Portland Cement Co., died Monday afternoon in a Mason City nursing home. He had lived in Mason City all but about three years of his life and made his home at 917 N. Georgia.

He retired from Northwestern States in August, 1957, after 42 years of service, the last 13 years of which he was plant safety director.

He was appointed constable in February 1958 to fill a vacancy and was re-elected to four two-year terms. During his long career in the cement industry, he also served as chairman of the 2nd district of the Iowa Poultry Improvement Association from 1930-43.

He had served as chief patriarch of Anchor Encampment 108 when his wife was chief matriarch of Anchor Encampment Auxiliary 8. He also served as vice commander of the Sons of Union Veterans and was superintendent of the poultry show at the North Iowa Fair.

He was born on a farm in Bath township south of Mason City, Aug. 9, 1878. His father, a carpenter, was killed in a house moving accident when the boy was six months old. The mother moved her family to Mason City and for years was the cook in the Anderson Hotel.

Two months before graduation from Mason City High School, Mr. Bemis went to work for the late W. E. Brice. In July, 1909 he began his employment at Northwestern States as a piece work operator. In 1913 he left the pack house for the loading department and became head of the department in 1920. He became director of safety at the plant in 1944.

Mr. Bemis was a member of the I.O.O.F., Elks, Moose and Foresters lodges and the Sons of Union Veterans. He also ws a member of the Rod and Gun Club.

Mr. Bemis was married to Leona Florence Bebee, of Manchester, Dec. 9, 1908, in Mason City. She died a year ago.
