LAKE RESIDENT DIES SUDDENLY
B. H. MATTHEWS, 68, SUCCUMBS FOLLOWING BRIEF ILLNESS

CLEAR LAKE – B. H. Matthews, 68, 306 North Third street, died unexpectedly at a Mason City hospital about 8 o’clock Tuesday morning following a brief illness. Mr. Matthews had not been well for a couple of weeks and was at the hospital a few days last week and then entered again Monday afternoon.

During his active years Mr. Matthews was a railway mail clerk, retiring a few years ago. He was a member of the Chivalric lodge No. 82, Knights of Pythias, and held the office of master of finance at the time of his death. He was also a member of the judiciary committee of the grand lodge for the domain of Iowa.

For a number of years he has been treasurer of the Clear Lake Congregational church of which he was a regular attendant. For several seasons he has also acted as financial agent for the annual July 4 celebration at Clear Lake, canvassing the business firms for funds to carry on the project.

Mr. Matthews was born at Spring Prairie, Wis., April 10, 1871, and spent his boyhood days in Geneva, Wis. He attended high school at Elgin, Ill., and was married to Miss Annette Jackson at Elgin in 1892. A year later they moved to Clear Lake where they have since resided.

In 1897 Mr. Matthews received an appointment in the railway mail service in which capacity he served until his retirement in 1933. He was affiliated with the Congregational church and Knights of Pythias lodge and was actively interested in all community affairs.

Besides his wife Mr. Matthews is survived by three sons, Harold in China; Jackson, Strawberry Point, and Roderic, Philadelphia, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Harry Conklin, Osage, and Mrs. Leroy Knutson, Elkader, and nine grandchildren. Two sons, Harold and Roderic, will not attend the services.
