DEATH OF S. O. SMITH

S. O. Smith died at his farm home in north Clear Lake township Sunday about 5 o’clock. Death was due principally to old age, Mr. Smith being 81 years old. Friends see now that Mr. Smith had been failing for some time but on account of his always having been so active they were somewhat surprised at his first signs of breaking down some three of four months ago.

Samuel Owen Smith was born in Manchester, England March 26, 1830 and came to America 55 years ago settling first at New Orleans. He came to Iowa 36 years ago and to the farm where he died. Mr. Smith had been married three times, his last wife’s death occurring six years ago. He was a man of very bright intellect and has led an exceedingly active life. For seventeen years he was assessor of Clear Lake township.

Deceased is survived by a son in England besides his two sons here, Walter and Homer, and his daughter, Emily.

Funeral services were held from the Congregational church Tuesday at 1:30. Burial in Clear Lake Cemetery.
