NELS C. ANDERSEN JR.

MARSHALLTOWN – Nels Chris “Gunner” Andersen Jr., 67, of Marshalltown, formerly of Clear Lake and Des Moines, died Thursday (Dec. 29, 1994) at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. The Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Mason City, will officiate. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Clear Lake V.F.W. Post 4868.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Nels Chris “Gunner” Andersen Jr. was born Sept. 28, 1927, at Clear Lake, the son of Nels Chris Sr. and Amalie (Sorensen) Andersen. He attended Clear Lake schools and worked as a construction laborer in the Clear Lake area. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1946 to August 1947 and received the World War II Victory Medal. Three years later he enlisted in the Air Force and served from December 1950 to August 1954. He was united in marriage to Helen M. Elmore on Dec. 1, 1961, in Des Moines. She preceded him in death in June 1975.

He resided in Des Moines until 1990 when due to a fractured hip he lived in the Veteran’s Home at Marshalltown.

He was a past president of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and American legion.

Survivors include three sisters, Viola Stokes and Ann Hill, both of Clear Lake, and Emma Peterson, Forest City, and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister, Ruby Shay.
