HAD BEEN IN FAILING HEALTH LONG PERIOD

CLEAR LAKE – Darwin H. Culver, 77, died in his sleep at his home, 605 South Fourth street, about 2:30 o’clock Monday morning following a long period of failing health, losing strength rapidly the past three days.

Mr. Culver was born at Auronaville, Wis., Aug. 9, 1865, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Culver, and came to Iowa in 1885, settling first at Portland and coming to Clear Lake in January, 1887. On Aug. 29, 1890, he was married to Miss Ida M. Beaver at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Beaver, Clear Lake, and had lived in Clear Lake ever since.

For a time Mr. Culver was associated with Mr. Beaver in buying of poultry, eggs and butter but soon launched upon a gardening career for which he is widely known and in which he was still engaged at the time of death.

Mr. and Mrs. Culver had two daughters. Maude, who became Mrs. Cleve Vittetoe, died about 17 years ago, leaving two step-daughters. One of them, Virginia Vittetoe, was reared in the Culver home and is now Mrs. Harold Klein, Davenport, who has two sons who are regarded as great-grandchildren by the Culvers. The other is Mrs. Carl Bauer, Estes Park, Cal.

Their other daughter, Faith, became Mrs. R. A. Monaghen, Marion Park drive. Besides his wife, Mrs. Monaghen, and others named, Mr. Culver is survived by six grandchildren, Darwin, Conlan, Cleve, John, Louise and Margaret Monaghen, and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Coville, San Diego, Cal.

Mr. Culver was a lifelong member of the Methodist church and a charter member of the Epworth League in Clear Lake. He was superintendent of the Sunday school and taught a class for many years. He had been a member of the church board since 1890. He was a member of I.O.O.F. lodge No. 187 and was known over a large territory through his work in the Iowa State Vegetable Growers association of which he was the first president.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock with the Rev. Thomas B. Collins, pastor in charge. Burial will be in Clear Lake cemetery. Ward’s funeral home is making the arrangements. The body will lie in state at the church an hour before the services.
