DEATH OF JOHN BONNER SR.
John Bonner Sr., who wore the blue in the great struggle for freedom and to perpetrate the stars and stripes, answered the summons of the Great Commander and passed to eternity’s camping ground on Friday, August 25th.
John Bonner Sr. was born in Lesershire, England, April 22nd, 1833 and in 1855 he emigrated to America. He espoused the cause of the union and enlisted in 1862, from Clinton, Iowa and was discharged from service at Mobile, Ala., on July 8, 1865. He was a veteran of many hard fought battles, participating in the famous siege of Vicksburg.
On February 10, 1868, he was united in marriage to Fany Gorst, who with the mother and eleven children, survive him. The children are Mrs. Mary Noonan, Mrs. Catharine Major, Mrs. Laura Sykes, Mrs. Martha Schallenberger, Mrs. Emma Rish, Thos., John Jr., James, George, Jess and Frank Bonner and Mrs. Myra Stanfield, an adopted daughter, to whom the family was greatly attached and a great favorite of Mr. Bonner. He leaves a brother, Jas. Bonner of Mt. Horeb, Wis., and thirty-two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Since 1878, with this family, he operated a farm near Clear Lake until about six years ago he retired to his late home in Clear Lake.
The funeral services were held from his late home Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Gillies and in charge of the G.A.R. Post.
To his family and his large number of friends, there surely is “one vacant chair.”
