GARFIELD “GAR” BIEBER

CLEAR LAKE – Garfield (Gar) E. Bieber, 63, of 802 S. 14th St., Clear Lake, died Monday (Sept. 12, 1994) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Rev. Larry Squier will officiate. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Clear Lake V.F.W. Post No. 4868.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. The family suggests memorials in his name.

He was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Clear Lake, to Phillip and Eva (Barlow) Bieber. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1948 and from Mason City Junior College in 1950. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids before joining the U.S. Air Force and serving as a sergeant during the Korean Conflict. After re-enlisting, he was sent to Puerto Rico, where he lost his right arm in a gunnery accident.

After being medically discharged, he sold insurance for People’s Life and later worked for C & H Gas until his retirement.

He married Darlene Dobbs June 2, 1951, in Biloxi, Miss.

He was an avid sports fan, loved auctions and buying and selling antiques. He also enjoyed playing cards and pool. His greatest joy was being with his family and holding cookouts. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Clear Lake American Legion Post.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Clear Lake; six children, Doug, John and Pam Bieber and Steve and his wife, Collette Bieber, all of Clear Lake, Craig and his wife, Lorraine Bieber, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Debbie and her husband, Richard Menges, of Mason City; two brothers, Dr. Rae and his wife, Connie Bieber, of Clear Lake, and Phillip and his wife, Gayle Bieber, of Ventura; five sisters, Mrs. Marion Hankenson and her husband, Carl, Mrs. Millie McNally, Mrs. Jean Hugh and Mrs. Josie Peterson and her husband, Pete, all of Clear Lake, and Mrs. Evelyn Johnson and her husband Rudy, of International Falls, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Phillip Bieber, Angela Bieber, Dustin Bieber, Drew Bieber, Sheila Guzman, Jesse Tamez and Lori Ann Bieber; and one great-grandchild, Joseph Guzman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth Bieber and Donald Kunnert.
