LAKE BAKERY PRESIDENT DIES

CLEAR LAKE – William “Bill” Frederick Burkhardt, 78, 912 S. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, owner and president of Clear Lake Bakery, died Friday (Dec. 26, 1980) at his home.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with Dr. Lyle Leider officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will begin today at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, where Masonic services will be held at 7:30 tonight.

Mr. Burkhardt was the owner and president of the Clear Lake Bakery. He was born May 21, 1902 in Crailsheim, Germany and came to the U.S. in 1923. In 1929 he bought into a small retail bakery in Clear Lake and expanded it into a large, wholesale baking firm, which today is one of the largest employers in Clear Lake. He was in the bakery business for 51 years.

Survivors include three half-sisters, Bertha Underkofler, Milwaukee, Wis.; Louise Mueller, New York City, N.Y., and Emmy Thurnhuber, of Germany, also several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, North Iowa Shriners, Mason City Elks Club, American Bakery Association, and American Society of Bakers Engineers. He was also a board director of the Clear Lake Bank and Trust and First Federal Savings and Loan, Clear Lake. He was the grand marshal for the July 4, 1980 parade held in Clear Lake.

The family requests memorials be made to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospital.
