MELVILLE P. HUGHES

Melville P. Hughes, 87, 408 North 4th Street, long time Clear Lake resident died on Friday afternoon at a Mason City hospital following an illness. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept 18 at the First Congregational Church. Rev. Kenneth Ubbelohde officiated and interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Melville P. Hughes was born Sept. 4, 1891, in Chicago to William and Luella ‘Prince’ Hughes. During his youth the family moved to Clear Lake where he graduated from Clear Lake high school. He attended Tolan Business Univ., (now Hamilton Business College.) He married Celia Clack at Clear Lake on June 17, 1913, who preceded him in death in 1961.

Mr. Hughes spent nearly 50 years traveling for the Freeman Coal Co., Mining Division of General Dynamics Corporation, prior to his retirement.

Surviving are four daughters, Mary Ann Hughes, Clear Lake; Mrs. Burton ‘Margaret’ Doudna of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. Richard ‘Elizabeth’ Morrissey, Edina, Minn.; and Mrs. Glenn ‘Katherine’ Short of Stanley, Ia. He is also survived by two brothers, Melville W. ‘Bud’ and Richard of Clear Lake, 22 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Mr. Hughes attended the First Congregational Church, was a past Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias, a member of the Moose and Elks Lodges of Mason City, was a member of the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce and was on the Board of Trustees of the Congregational Church for several years.

Honorary pallbearers were T. J. Burns, L. Earl Ashland, Jim H. Anderson, Floyd Kimball, F. P. Walker, Fred J. Wagner and Harold Thompson.

Pallbearers were Dr. Tom W. Joslyn, Robert F. Ingersoll, James F. Connell, Bill Martin, Crosby Ingersoll, Robert Clausen and Dr. M. L. Knutson.

Mrs. Tom Treloar was the organist. George Klaasen ushered.

Transcriber’s Note – Melville Prince Hughes was born September 4, 1891, died September 15, 1978 and was buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Section 4 Row 12.
