OLD SETTLER GONE

With the going of the old year a life that reached through the greater part of a century came to a close.

Ashton Hugh died at his home in Clear Lake, Iowa, Thursday morning December 31, 1908. He had reached the ripe old age of 83 years, 10 months and 21 days, having been born on February 10, 1825.

England was his native country. After attaining his majority he came to the United States where he spent the remainder of his long life. In 1857, on November 27, he was married to Mary Haigh, with whom he lived in holy wedlock for fifty years, and from whom he was only separated by death which claimed her two months ago.

Mr. Hugh came to this country in 1876 and lived the first year on the Ed Nichols farm. Then he purchased a quarter section on the east line of Union township. He gradually added to his possessions until at the time of his death he owned a tract of 440 acres. He was a good citizen. His death brought forth many expressions of affection and regard and the funeral on Saturday was attended by a large concourse of old friends and neighbors.
