MELVIN E. BARLOW

CLEAR LAKE – Melvin Ellis Barlow, 81, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (May 17, 1992) at the Americana Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Revs. Fred Lewis and Bernard Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with an I.O.O.F. service at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Melvin Ellis Barlow Memorial Fund.

Melvin Ellis Barlow was born Dec. 12, 1910, in Mt. Vernon Township in Cerro Gordo County, a son of Thomas and Lottie (VanHorn) Barlow.

He married Ruby Grell on March 2, 1940, at Garner. They farmed south of Clear Lake until 1978. They then retired to their present home in Clear Lake. He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and a member of Clear Lake Senior Citizens. He loved to do woodworking and had made many pieces of furniture for his family. He was an avid Hawkeye fan. He was a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather. He was always thinking of his family’s welfare.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Barlow of Clear Lake; two daughters, Carolyn and husband, Allan Nyhus, Cedar falls, and Julie and husband, Lance Schelhammer, Lenexa, Kan.; two sisters, Alta Sturgeon, Klemme, and Edna Barlow, Clear Lake; and four grandchildren, Leslie Smith, Ann Arbor, Mich., Susan and Austin Nyhus, Cedar Falls, and Lance Schelhammer II, Lenexa, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Maude Barlow.
