DEATH OF MRS. SPARKS

The intimate friends and neighbors of Mrs. J. W. Sparks have known for some time of her serious illness, but to the community in general the announcement of her death on May 16th, at 10 p.m., was a shock and a surprise.

Until last January Mrs. Sparks appeared to be in her usual health, but from that time on she had several severe spells of sickness and she gradually wasted away. Her disease was of an obscure nature, to some extent, and baffled the skill of her physicians. She was unable to retain nourishment much of the time and became greatly emaciated, death finally resulting from inanition.

Her death is deeply deplored, not only by a devoted husband and loving daughters, but by everyone who had come to know her, a woman of such sweet disposition and strong Christian character. The family is one highly esteemed in this community and on every hand there is tender sympathy for the afflicted ones.

Sarah J. Brayton was born July 30, 1854, in Grundy County, Illinois, where she lived with her parents until March, 1872, at which time they moved to Clear Lake. Here she was married February 21, 1875, to J. W. Sparks and three daughters were born to them.

Deceased had been a devoted Christian since childhood, and at the time of her death was a member of Lakeside Congregational Church.

Besides her husband and daughters she is survived by two brothers and three sisters of whom two, Mrs. John Parker and William Brayton, are residents of Clear Lake.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. W. Heyward, were held at the late residence of the deceased on Sunday, the 19th inst., at 1 p.m. Interment in Clear Lake Cemetery. The attendance was unusually large, the funeral procession being about three-quarters of a mile in length.

Transcriber’s Note – Saran Jane Sparks was born July 30, 1854, died May 16, 1901 and was buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Section 5 Row 1.
