MASON CITY FLYER KILLED
LT. JACK MACDONALD IN GERMANY PLANE CRASH

Word was received here Friday afternoon that 1st Lt. Jack MacDonald of Mason City was killed in an airplane crash in Germany Thursday. No further details were immediately available. He was the son of James H. MacDonald, 903 N. Federal.

Lt. MacDonald had been stationed in Germany for 2 years. He had been flying P-47s and also acting as supply officer. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Baumgardner of Rock Falls, and 3 children, Jack, Jr., 8; Susan, 6, and Jimmy Allen, 1. The family has been living in Munich, Germany and the 2 older children have been attending an American school there.

Lt. MacDonald was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the army air forces at Enid Army Airfield, Enid, Okla., on Oct. 16, 1945. He attained high scholastic honors and was a member of the 1937 graduating class of Mason City high school, attending Mason City junior college and was graduated from the University of Iowa in 1941.

His brother, Capt. James W. (Mickey) MacDonald, who is an air force flyer on the Berlin airlift, completed a short leave in Mason City Tuesday and left enroute for Berlin the same day.

Transcriber’s Note – Jack G. MacDonald was born July 10, 1919, died December 30, 1948 and was buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Section H Row 1.
