MRS. J. ELSTON FUNERAL IS HELD
LAKE RESIDENT SURVIVED BY 3 CHILDREN, 4 SISTERS, 1 GRANDSONCLEAR LAKE – Funeral services for Mrs. J. W. Elston, 74, who died at a Mason City hospital Sunday, were held at Ward’s Funeral Home Tuesday at 2 o’clock with the Rev. Homer E. Blough, pastor of the Congregational Church, conducting the rites. Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery beside her late husband.
Pallbearers were Sam Kennedy, Will Meyers, Ray Baker, Clarence McGowan, P. J. Pederson, and George Davis. During the services O.J. King, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Harry Mason, sang “My Task” and “Somewhere a Voice is Calling.”
Catherine Elizabeth Guinter was born near Dakota, Ill., Nov. 25, 1862, the second daughter in a family of 11 children. She attended the village School of Dakota and took an active part in the social life of the community, uniting with the Lutheran Church of Dakota at an early age.
April 6, 1882 she was united in marriage to John W. Elston of Pocatonica, Ill., and after four years’ residence in Illinois the family moved to a farm near Mason City where they spent 20 years of farm life. On March 1, 1906, Mr. and Mrs. Established the present home on East Main Street, Clear Lake.
Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Elston: Walter I. Elston, Chicago; Mabel, now Mrs. A.L. Emmert, Northfield, Minn., and Mary Alta, at home. Mr. Elston died Aug. 4, 1933, but Mrs. Elston and the youngest daughter continued to live in the home.
Besides her children, Mrs. Elston is survived by one grandson, Leslie A. Emmert and four sisters, Mrs. J. J. Meyers, Dakota, Ill., Mrs. E. Martin and Mrs. Charles Garman, Freeport, Ill., and Mrs. Carrie Martin, Rockford, Ill.
On Sunday, June 13, Mrs. Elston was taken to Mercy Hospital in Mason City for treatment of a hip fracture. In spite of medical care and skilled nursing, complications developed which resulted in her death on Sunday, Aug. 22.
Mrs. Elston’s son, Walter I. Elston, Chicago and her son-in-law, A. L. Emmert, Northfield, Minn., were present for the funeral. Mrs. Emmert has been in Clear Lake for some time assisting in the care of her mother.
