ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
Mrs. Christian Hugi, who came to Clear Lake in 1869 with her family, died on Sunday, March 21st, at the residence of her son J.C. Hugi in Plymouth, at the ripe old age of 81 years.
Deceased was Clarinda J. McCloud, born in Indiana, January 22, 1828. Afterwards the family moved to Joliet, Ill., thence to Columbia Co., Wis. Here she was married in 1866 to Christian Hugi. In 1869 Mr. and Mrs. Hugi moved to Clear Lake which has been their home for many years. Mr. Hugi died about five years ago. Mrs. Hugi was married twice and by each marriage there were three children. One of each family is living, the survivors being George W. Donaldson, of Clear Lake, a son by the first marriage, and J.C. Hugi of Plymouth, son by the second marriage.
Mrs. Hugi lived the pioneer life which has passed away. In Indiana the country was new and wild. While the family lived at Joliet they had to seek protection more than once in old Fort Dearborn. In Wisconsin it was a new country the family helped to develop. These old pioneers are rapidly passing away and before long the tales of pioneer hardships and privations, and pleasures will not be told by word of mouth.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the home of J.C. Hugi in Plymouth. The body was brought to Clear Lake the same day and interred by the side of her husband.
Transcriber’s Note – Clarinda J. Hugi was born January 22, 1828, died March 21, 1909 and was buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
