ALOYSIUS LEO FANGMAN

CLEAR LAKE – Aloysius Leo Fangman, 83, died Friday (Nov. 26, 1999) at Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan, the Rev. Paul Fangman and the Rev. Robert English officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Clear Lake VFW.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with a rosary beginning at 6 p.m. followed by a scriptural prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or to Newman Catholic Schools in memory of Al Fangman.

Aloysius Leo Fangman was born June 18, 1916, in Raeville, Neb., son of John F. and Mary E. (Bode) Fangman. He married JoAnn Drees on Jan. 8, 1944, in Carroll. She preceded him in death in January 1981. He married Margaret Plonsky Schmolke in September 1982.

Al grew up in Raeville, Neb., and graduated from St. John’s Catholic High School in Raeville in 1934, and then from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., in 1938. He joined the ROTC program in 1936 and served his summers at Fort Snelling, Minn. He served as a major in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines and then in Australia.

Al worked at several different companies in securities and investments. He loved his family and grandchildren and was a man of faith. He enjoyed fishing, boating and cross-country skiing. He was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the VFW and American Legion, and the Clear Lake Lions. He worked hard on the fundraising and building of Newman Catholic Schools, Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Fangman, Mason City; four children, Teri Williams and her husband, Lindsey, Scottsdale, Ariz., Jill Svoboda and her husband Larry, Jan Weger and her husband, Jay “Skip” and Jay Fangman and his wife, Linda, all of Arvada, Colo.; 11 grandchildren, Annie Svoboda, St. Benedict College, St. Joseph, Minn., Kathy, Brian and David Svoboda, Colo., John Weger, Arvada, Colo., Christina Weger, Arlington, Va., Elizabeth, Daniel and Joseph Williams, all of Scottsdale, Ariz., Michael Fangman, Arvada, Colo., and Emily Fangman, Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Florentine Mattner, Raeville, Neb. Josephine Quinn, Albion, Neb., and Sally Klitz and her husband, Joe, Dodge, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Audrey Fangman, Raeville, Neb.; four stepchildren, Sue Foy, Mason City, Kathie Gunnare and her husband, Ron, Davenport, Dorie Coughenour and her husband, Shane, Des Moines, and Jay Schmolke and his wife, April; seven step-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, JoAnn; a daughter, Kathy Fangman; three brothers; and four sisters.

Al Fangman was a man of great faith, loving father and a loyal friend.
