BETTY MARILYN OLESON

CLEAR LAKE -- Betty Marilyn Oleson, 69, of 310 N. Ninth St., died Sunday (May 10, 1992) at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, 205 W. Tenth Ave. N. Clear Lake, with the Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. The body was cremated. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., is in charge of services. The family suggests memorials in her name.

Betty Marilyn Oleson was born Dec. 23, 1922, in Clear Lake, Iowa, a daughter of Verne Henry and Iva Marguerite “Hanna” Petersen.

She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1940 and Mason City Junior College in 1942. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Trinity College in Sioux City, Iowa, in May of 1946 and a diploma as Graduate Nurse from St. Joseph Mercy College of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa, during September of 1946; a Bachelor of Science in education from Drake University in 1962, and a Master of Science in education from Drake University in 1969.

She taught at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, and Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa. She taught in public school Marble Rock, Ventura and Clear Lake, retiring in 1978.

She married James Allen Oleson Aug. 31, 1950, at First Congregational Church in Clear Lake, Iowa.

She was a 50-year member of First Congregational Church in Clear Lake, lifetime member of the National Education Association, member of Royal Neighbors of America, and member of the Star-ODO Club.

Survivors include her husband, James Allen Oleson, Clear Lake; her parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Oleson, Northwood; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Richard “Juana Kay” Petersen, West Des Moines, and Mrs. James “Shirley” Groff, Austin, Minn.; three uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Peter O. Petersen, Clear Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Petersen of Florida and Mrs. Art “Gretchen” Petersen of Clear Lake; aunt of Mr. and Mrs. Dorance “Ruth” Day, Ventura; and others including three nieces and one nephew, two great-nieces and three great-nephews and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, George and Richard.
