November 17, 1929 ~ June 08, 2004THORNTON — Gladys L. Floy, 74, died Tuesday (June 8, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton, with the Rev. Jerry Gernander officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Gladys Lucille Davids was born Dec. 17, 1929, at home in Geneva, the daughter of Harm and Margaret (Backerman) Davids. She attended Sheffield Public School and graduated in 1947. After graduation she worked at the Sheffield Press. On Sept. 3, 1951, Gladys was united in marriage with Marvin Robert Floy at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura. They made their home on a farm south of Ventura and later moved to Charles City. In 1966, they moved to Thornton where she worked at the Southern County News. During this time she also taught kindergarten at Gethsemeny Lutheran School (now Prince of Peace Lutheran Church) in Mason City from 1967 to 1969. She then worked at the First State Bank of Thornton from 1970 to 1990. Church was always an important part of Gladys' life and she was a member of Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton and had been a member of the Ladies Aide. Gladys and Marvin would go to northern Minnesota for fishing trips. Gladys greatly enjoyed playing with her grandkids and her golden retrievers.
Survivors include her two sons, Steven (Dawn) Floy, of Rockwell and Timothy Floy, of Thornton; grandchildren, Jennifer (Rob) Benson, of Mason City, Matthew Floy, of Rockwell, Melissa, Margaret and Jonathan Floy, all of Racine, Wis.; two sisters, Billie (Harold) Culver, of Sheffield, and Doris (Kenneth) Ashland, of Spirit Lake; one brother, Harvey Davids, of Lakewood, Colo.
Welcoming Gladys with her savior Jesus Christ are her husband, Marvin Floy; her parents; two sisters, Jeanette Steffa and Mabel Tesdahl; two brothers, Peter Davids and Raymond Davids.
