Obituary - Donald L. Christensen
April 13, 1938 ~ June 18, 2004

MASON CITY — Donald L. Christensen, 66, of Mason City, died Friday (June 18, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Reverend Jo Frahm Watkins officiating. A private family internment service will be held in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave., and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Mason City High School Booster Club.

Don was born on April 13, 1938, the son of Elmer C. and Anna J. (Sondergaard) Christensen. He grew up in Thornton, where he graduated from Thornton High School in 1955. Don then moved to Mason City, where he attended Mason City Junior College, and spent the remainder of his life.

He owned Christensen Public Transit, which operated the city and school buses in Mason City. Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as head usher for many years. Don was formerly a member of the Noon Lions Club, served as the Mason City Softball Commissioner for several years and was very active in the Mason City Booster Club. Don was an avid sports fan and enjoyed traveling. He could often be spotted at games supporting the Mason City Mohawks or Iowa Hawkeyes, whether they were playing at home or on the road.

Don is survived by his daughter, Kim Christensen, of Loveland, Colo.; son, Steve Christensen, of Lake Mills; son, John Christensen, his wife, Colleen, and their children, Ryan and Nathan, of Twinsburg, Ohio; sister, Betty Gerencser, of Carrollton, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Mary Christensen, of LaFayette, Colo.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Bob Bensch, of Mankato, Minn.; sister-in-law, Pat Christensen, of Houston, Texas; and ten nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Anna Christensen; an infant sister, Cleone; brother, Jack Christensen; brother-in-law, John Gerencser; and nephew, Tom Gerencser.
