Obituary - Thelma (Baker) Matthews Best
October 05, 1909 ~ July 28, 1998

CLEAR LAKE — Thelma Mathews Best, 88, of Clear Lake, formerly of Thornton, died Tuesday (July 28, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Thornton.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Thornton, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Interment will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton. The Rev. Jim Gochenouer will officiate.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials to Thelma Mathews Best Memorial Fund.

Thelma was born Oct. 5, 1909, south of Thornton, to Alvin and Nellie (Ashby) Baker. She attended country school and graduated from Thornton High School in 1927.

On Nov. 29, 1928, she was united in marriage to John Mathews. To this union was born a son, Donald, and a daughter, Marilyn, deceased at birth.

They lived in Charles City a short time before moving back to the Thornton area, where they farmed until John's death in 1957.

In 1959, she was united in marriage to Floyd Best and made their home on a farm near Rockwell. In 1966, Floyd passed away and she returned to her home in Thornton, where she continued to live until this spring, when she moved into Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Thelma loved to play cards, work in her garden and always enjoyed visiting with her many friends and family.

She is survived by her son, Donald Mathews and his wife, Shirley, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Kirk Mathews and his wife, Elizabeth, of Hampton, Iowa, Karmen Bauer, of Clear Lake, and Jolene Huinker and her husband, Larry, of West Union, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, John Mathews, of Forest City, Iowa, Paul Mathews, of Chicago, Ill., Erin Mathews, of Hampton, Iowa, Kellie Wallace, of Floyd, Iowa, Matt Bauer, of Belmond, Iowa, and Amy Huinker and Brandon Huinker, of West Union, Iowa; and one great-great-grandchild, Brittany Vrchoticky.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; her daughter, Marilyn; and one brother, Lloyd Baker.

[Interment was made at Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Thornton.]
